The story was inspired by the life of Earl Manigault, a basketball player who lost everything in drugs. Near the end of his life he dedicated his time to helping children of Harlem avoid the same fate. It was during this time that he started the “Walk Away From Drugs” tournament for kids. He died in 1998 from a heart failure.
The storyline in the actual film very non-linear and I think it is meant to be more of an abstract subjective interpretation of Manigault’s personal struggle with his inner-demons. It’s a beautiful little short though and the color and animation are really great for a student film. Impressive work. You can learn a little more about the project at the official website as well.
Sebastien LABAN emailed me today to let me know about a 3D animated short-film project he and his wife, Virginie GOYONS (why the capitalized last names [I don’t know]) have been working on in their spare time entitled, ‘Meet Meline’.
