Zack Nathanson is Downwiththe.biz and that is fantastik with a k.
Eric Elms is the founder of the Brooklyn-based design studio Adorn. They have a long scroll of really exceptional and intelligent work.
Eurico Sá Fernandes is 18 years old. Yeah, that’s right. 18 years old and his portfolio is better than most people who have been in the profession for years. I hate the whole youth culture worship that we are always guilty of but every once in a while you just have to be a little amazed by such raw talent. This is one of those times.
There is a lot of really fun work in the Behance-folio of Barcelona design studio Valistika. Apparently a full on website is coming soon but there is some great stuff already going at Behance. I am really starting to appreciate the pencil/graphic mashup stuff going on lately.
Computerlove has an interesting post up tonight compliments of the smart design-writer/trendcaster, Matthew Newton. He pointed out that Complex Magazine has a 2 part mini documentary (you can view above) all about the collaborative process that holds together the Keystone Design Union (the KDU).
A year or more back the ‘Trust the KDU’ posters and type treatments were as ubiquitous as geometric design and triangles this year. They became the trumpet cry stating ‘I have arrived’. As a result, controversy is always sparked by mention of the KDU as it has become a form of validation for a lot of visual artisans and designers to be embraced by the consultancy and shielded by their umbrella. I suspect they are really just the first of what will be many collectives held together loosley by a worldwide collaborative working network connected by the internet.
Regardless if you feel outcast from the 800 members spanning 60 countries, it is an interesting model and merits attention for the innovative strategy. So long as everyone is profiting from the group effort, I don’t see why it can’t continue to work. The big question always is where does it all trace back to and who is really benefiting. I have heard good and bad things about the mastermind behind the KDU (the wizard of the KDU Oz) David Gensler, but if you are of the entrepreneurial mind, you have to admit he is pretty damned brilliant for putting this all together. It’s undeniable that there are some just downright amazingly talented people involved and he served as a catalyst.
So I say to the spurned, start your own KDU.
Trevor Conrad is originally from Seattle, but currently lives in Savannah GA where he is pursuing an MFA in Graphic Design at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Trevor is a longtime lurker on the blog who often leaves comments on the blog and isn’t afraid to give an honest opinion. He has some smart work in his book to partner his smart comments.
Buenos Aires-based graphic designer/illustrator Leandro Castelao has some deceptively simple yet strikingly unique work in his portfolio. He has his niche dialed in tight.
Discovered via my favorite But Does It Float.
Remember design celebrity Robert Lindstrom of Design Chapel fame? He was all the internet rage a few years back and (thanks to someone informing me today) I found out that he has completely relaunched his website and put some new work online. There is some really nice stuff in his book and he is still worth the press.
Brooklyn-based designer/illustrator, Norik has updated with some nice work. His portfolio is pretty varied and he isn’t afraid to experiment or dabble in different styles which is really nice. Consequently, there are some really unusual and unexpected pieces in his book (especially loving some of the psychedelic work).
Argentinian design studio, Design Has No Name have relaunched their website with some really clean and attractive new work.
Creative consultancy/design agency, Made By Six has updated both their website and portfolio with some tasty new design steez.
Andrés Yeah doesn’t like to talk about himself which is fine because that leaves the work to speak for itself. There is some interesting work ranging from illustration through design in his Flickr-folio.
Toronto-based print/design shop Doublenaut has generated some really clean and tasty graphics for rock posters over the last few years. Consequently they have created some posters for really big-named bands.
Recent Milwaukee Institute of Art + Design graduate Brett Stenson has an interesting portfolio ranging from vividly-colored illustration through graphic design work.
I wrote about Philipp Zurmoehle’s website and work ‘Phillennium‘ a couple of months back but stumbled upon his Flickr-folio today and discovered there is a lot more in his Flickr pages than on his website.
Illustrator/designer Damien Correll has updated once again with some really nice hand-treated design work. A lot of the images are pretty small but there is some really nice work on display regardless.
Andrew Lister is a second year graphic design student at Northumbria University in Newcastle. He already has some really nice and cleanly executed work in his portfolio.
