Curse of the Multiples

“BIG. BIGGER. BETTER. Three words which are also descriptive of freelance graphic designer/artist/carbonated drink drinker Evan Melnyk. His favourite movies are your favourite movies, he enjoys music playing and awake dreaming. Most importantly, he moonlights as a body double for Prince (when he is not busy painting or fancifying products, garments, magazines and websites). A move to London, England, has slowly been working itself out and Curse of the Multiples will be hitting its shores soon.”

John Morgan Studio

There is some interesting work in the portfolio of London-based John Morgan Studio. The man behind the studio has been at it for quite a long time now. If you check the about section you will be greeted by a long ass list of things he has done. His work is subtle but there is a kind of thinking behind everything that I really appreciate. The poster I posted above was created using felt tip markers and pens. It’s a pretty outrageous way to create a poster but I can’t think of a way to make something more unique. I like that it required a real effort but the end result was still minimal and in keeping with the rest of his work.

Words are Pictures

Craig Ward is another designer I have known about for some time and have neglected to write about. His work is always good and the typography in his work is stellar. Craig graduated in 2003 and now divides his time as a typographer and designer at Chi & Partners. He resides in London where he works predominantly in the Editorial and Publishing fields and sees himself as a typographic illustrator, bringing to life headlines, creating new typographic treatments and continuously exploring the notion of word as image.

Funny, I kind of think of myself in that way too. His site is often updated and his work never disappoints so be sure to bookmark it and check back.

Interesting and thoughtful work by small London-based graphic design studio Oscar and Ewan. The type in the signage above was created by hanging numerous wooden dowels. How awesome is that?

James Dawe

James Dawe creates some wildly imaginative collages that I have a hard time taking my eyes off of. I have posted his work for the Nike Football project before but I don’t know if I actually posted his home site. Regardless, it is no doubt worth dropping in on for another browse.

Here is his profile:
“James Dawe is an Illustrator & Image Maker who grew up and still operates out of East London. James’ work explores contemporary collage techniques which formulate in striking imagery and composition. Since graduating from the University of Brighton James has regularly freelanced with Village Green (formerly Love). Stand out projects include a Financial Times international Billboard campaign, the Cover of G2, Sky Sports press & billboard campaigns and a music video for The Maccabees.”

No Days Off

Comments Off on No Days OffGraphic Design

Again as opposed to rewriting it myself here is the profile content from London-based creative studio No Days Off: “No Days Off is a creative studio specialising in graphic design and art direction. The studio works on a diverse range of projects, including branding, design for the music industry, art direction for magazines and fashion clients, independent publishing and book design. No Days Off also strongly believes in producing work for non-commercial purposes. Ongoing themes include memory, girls clothing, dead celebrities and pens that run out.

No Days Off founder Patrick Duffy worked previously as art director of the alternative style and fashion magazine known as Sleazenation. He went on to set up the celebrated independent literary magazine Full Moon Empty Sports Bag with friends Ian Allison and Steve Cotton.”

There is a broad range of interesting work in their portfolio and a lot of it is just fun to look at.

Banksy – Cans Festival

Comments Off on Banksy – Cans FestivalArt

banksy_can_festival.jpg

Well, I had known about this before it even happened and I apologize for not writing about this earlier. Banksy held a one-of-a-kind show this week simply titled, ‘Cans Festival’ (a word play on the Cannes film festival). He invited more than 3 dozen international artists but also encouraged visitors to contribute their own grafitti starting Saturday. The festival was held in an apparently rarely used South London tunnel. Banksy told the Times of London, “I’m hoping we can transform a dark forgotten filth pit into an oasis of beautiful art – in a dark forgotten filth pit.”

The interesting thing to note here as it is a sharp turn in the career of the outlaw artist is that the show was approved and facilitated by Eurostar. Eurostart manages tunnel as it lies under an old train platform belonging to them at Waterloo Station. It’s an interesting development for Banksy as he has in the past been considered a wanted man by London authorities. It begs the question also as to whether or not he has unofficially been adopted into the mainstream. I am hoping not because it always seems like you can apply an expiration date to an artist once they reach that critical mass. I think Banksy is a true innovator though and I can easily imagine him reinventing himself, maybe even in another medium, under another name where he will no doubt burn another new and amazing trail.

Johnson Banks

Comments Off on Johnson BanksGraphic Design

Johnson Banks is a really interesting creative agency based out of London. They have created work for a broad spectrum of clients with no real discernable style. They prefer to be style-less and create according to the client’s needs, generating creative the most aptly solves the problem at hand. It’s a sincere approach that is worth taking note of. No surprisingly they have some really accomplished work in their portfolio including the stamps created for the Beatles above. Talk about a cool project, how much fun would it be to make stamps for the Beatles?

James Dawe – Nike Football Project

Comments Off on James Dawe – Nike Football ProjectIllustration

dawe_football.jpg

As a part of Nike’s Art of Football project (soccer to all us yanks), London-based illustrator James Dawe was asked to produce a series of art inspired by football. Only one copy of each was produced making them all true 1 over 1’s. The end result of the project can be seen at Dawe’s Flickr page. There are some really great pieces of original collage there.

You can also see more of Dawe’s work at his Agency YCN page, who also represents him.

He also has a page at POCKO People.
