Touchable Holography

Comments Off on Touchable HolographyTechnology

“Recently, mid-air displays are attracting a lot of attention in the fields of digital signage and home TV, and many types of holographic displays have been proposed and developed. Although we can “see” holograhpic images as if they are really floating in front of us, we cannot “touch” them, because they are nothing but light.

This project adds tactile feedback to the hovering image in 3D free space. Tactile sensation requires contact with objects, but including a stimulator in the work space dilutes the appearance of holographic images. The Airborne Ultrasound Tactile Display solves this problem by producing tactile sensation on a user’s hand without any direct contact and without diluting the quality of the holographic projection.”

You can get the full credits on this project at the Siggraph 2009 website. Siggraph is a conference about emerging technologies that is happening in New Orleans. It looks like it would have been a really exciting conference to attend.

Shadow Play

Comments Off on Shadow PlayMotion Graphics

“Stop-motion film, written, animated, & directed by Dan Blank. Winner of Los Angeles Film Festival (Best Short, 2002), 2002 Student Academy Award (Bronze) & 2003 Student Emmy Award (Gold).

In August of 1945, in a closing chapter of the second World War, a blinding flash lit the sky over Hiroshima. The places that were shielded from that searing light became permanent shadows on the city’s walls and streets, while the city itself was decimated. “Shadowplay” is the story of Akio, a shadow of a young boy, who wanders the city searching for his family, while trying to make sense of the unfathomable atrocity.”

Produced by Dan Blank & Cynthia Allen
Cast: Jennifer Kato, Takeo Matsushita, Jun Kim, Ako.
Music: Ryan Shore

C100 Purple Haze is a small multidisciplinary design studio based in Munich. They emailed today to let me know they launched a new website. I posted their website to the last version of my blog but somehow never managed to post them to the current version. They have a really impressive body of just flat out rock solid graphic design work.

I just ran across the Flickr-folio of Lee Misenheimer, a man you might remember from way back when who goes by the name Destroy Rock City. There isn’t a lot of work in his Flickr pages yet, but what is there is choice.

Hu2 generates vinyl stickers to hang around your household. They have some really interesting stuff happening within their catalog and it’s cool that they have created graphics that are meant to live within different rooms and environments in a typical home. Interesting idea.

The Clayton Brothers are a pair of artists now working in Pasadena, California but have home ties to good ole Denver, Colorado. I came across their work this morning while perusing the Denver Egotist and was really blown away by the paintings created for their recent exhibition, Jumbo Fruit, at Patrick Painter Gallery in Santa Monica. The paintings fall somewhere between pop and metaphysics and the resulting imagery is really amazing. You can also read Nathan Spoor‘s review of the exhibit at Juxtapoz.

Designer/artist, James Joyce has made some small updates to his lyrical portfolio since I last checked in. I appreciate the simple and bold graphic approach to much of his work. Oh dollar bill, you’re so funny and yet inconsolably evil. Wait, is that irony?

The photo-artwork of Gena Morgese is rather indescribable. It’s an image based exercise in storytelling and is without a doubt art. The familiarity is twisted into something new that forces the viewer to reconsider their perception.

Past Life Memory

Comments Off on Past Life MemoryWorld

I found this really interesting. Personally, I do believe in reincarnation and always have. Even from a very young age when I was taught not to. I realize that this is a polarizing view that not everyone shares but it is a subject I have always found fascinating because it gets to the very core of who we are and how we exist. I guess it has always just been impossible for me to believe that the unique energy that is who we are is individuals ever dies. I think it goes on and inhabits new forms. I do believe that time is relative and maybe so then is dimensionality. How do we know that, what we would call our soul, doesn’t move much more fluidly through time and space than we could perceive it? Maybe sometimes there is an overlap. Either way, it’s an interesting thing to think about.

Anyway, I won’t drone on because I know some get angered when I interrupt the stream of creative/design porn, so if you have the time, watch the documentary and form your own opinion. I do occasionally like to push the ‘Changethethought’ message through more than just creativity and design. Spirituality is the true source of creativity. We know so very little about our own existence and the inner workings of our being.
