Boston.com posted The Year in Pictures for 2010 and there are some downright stunning images to behold from what was without a doubt an extremely tumultuous year on this delicate planet. The oil spill in particular was horrendous and is still totally unforgivable.

The Telegraph has posted a series of coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) photographs of insects including the image of a maggot above with protruding eyes and fangs. I always thought maggots were disgusting but now I know they are just homely little vampires trying to get their slurp on. Just look at that desperate little face and you know he’s probably thinking, “hey, is that poo I smell?”

You will be carried away by photographer Maia Flore’s latest series titled ‘Sleep Elevations’. And yes that was a pun. And yes it was intended but in no way meant to detract from the beauty of Maia’s work. They make me think of those strange dreams where you feel the sensation of hovering above yourself or floating over a landscape.

Daniel Kennedy spends his time taking pictures of celebrities and gorgeous models but sometimes wishes he’d been a designer after spending much time picking fonts for his latest website. Daniel, I would be happy to trad for a month if you’d like to just try on the shoes and see if they fit. I promise to keep my desk chair warm for you so long as you line up a really sexy shoot. Think ‘micro-bikini’.

It’s been over a year since we said anything about photographer Ryan McGinley and in that time he has filled his cup with beautiful, whimsical images that make you want to strip down with a sparkler in hand and run off into the woods.

If anything could be said for photographer Todd Fisher, he is a keen observer always on the lookout for a window into a larger albeit potentially disturbing scene to preserve for all eternity.

‘The Animal Print Shop‘ is exactly as it sounds and it’s one of those rare simple and wonderful ideas that you wish you had thought of. It’s a series of photographic prints available in several sizes of quite possibly all of your favorite animals just hanging out and being the amazing creatures that they are. There is an enormous amount of personality on display and the raccoon prints in particular made me wish those little buggers didn’t claw around sometimes in my attic because they are absolutely adorable.

“I am a 32 year old photographer and designer, born and raised in Blissfield, a small farm town in southeastern Michigan. After graduating from the University of Michigan with a BFA in Photography and a BA in Graphic Design, I began working as a designer and art director, first in Chicago, then San Francisco, where I started my own studio and began working on several long term projects. Recently relocated back to Michigan, I am doing what little I can to help it recover its former glory.”

“The Firm is a searing photographic document of the British organized crime world, which received instant recognition. Over a four-year period Bain Hogg documented different aspects of the underworld, from exile in Tenerife to the broad spectrum of activity in the United Kingdom. Since Brighton Rock in the 1940s, photographers and film directors have been trying to capture the personalities and characteristics of the British urban gangster on film. These are not the faces of criminals who hide behind the facade of respectability or the corruption of political influence. They are, in fact, the real thing, men who hold their head up when challenged, and who seek no false redemption in the face of public vilification. Bain Hogg has captured for the first time in The Firm the weft and warp of these faces to whom violence is common currency and to whom loyalty is above all.”

Photographer Steven Brahms ironic images belie a cynicism about modern life. He embraces the ridiculous but finds a unique humor in the seriousness through which people approach life in the modern world. If you are curious about his process there are some wonderful answers available in an interview he did with Future Shipwreck.

Valerie Chiang was born in Taiwan in 1992 and currently resides in Raleigh, North Carolina. Her interest in photography began by visiting and sharing through Flickr and has advanced as a full on passion for fashion and photography. It’s easy to see at such a young age how richly that passion will reward her in the future. It’s amazing how quickly her talent has matured and it’s hard to imagine just how good she will become in the future.

Art and photography merge synonymously in a sometimes bloody-sexy mess under the hand and attentive eye of Kerstin zu Pan. One part arousal shaken not stirred with two parts disturbed.
