Visual Technicians

Visual Technicians is the art of University College of the Fraser Valley graduate Jeff Boyes. He screen prints all of his posters himself cutting almost all the film by hand and even cutting much of the paper by hand. He has some really exceptional posters for sale at his site featuring some of my favorite people from some of my favorite bands and movies. Don’t get too excited though because they tend to sell out fast.

Changethethought – Posters Round One

ctt_posters.jpg

Alright, so the fateful time has finally drawn near where it is time to actually print some of the posters I have created over the last several months. I have my quotes in for the first 7 posters. All of the posters (minus the Iso Series posters commemorating the isometric paper system) will be printed on A3 size paper. A3 is pretty close to 11×17. All of the posters will be printed on 100lb stock paper, some on white others on natural tone. Since they aren’t really large posters, they will be fairly inexpensive. The cost per poster will probably be in the 15-20 dollar range and I will be able to ship overseas, which makes it a pretty good deal if you are not subjugated to the sinking dollar like we are here in the states.

The question is, and I am having trouble with this myself so I am asking you, which ones do I print first? I will only be doing 7 at first and depending on how well the first series goes, I will be printing more in the fall. Which posters would you buy? Which posters do you like? Let me know with your comments or send me an email. I will be printing the ‘We Not Me’ poster for sure because there has been a really high volume of emails requesting that particular poster. Outside of that, they are all fair game. Please help me decide. I value your opinion as readers and you, after all, are my audience. If you frequent the blog often and enjoy the work I do, now is your chance to help determine what you would like to own for yourself. If you need a memory refresher, the posters are all listed in the PRINT section of the website.

Thank you so much in advance for reading the blog and supporting the site.

There are some lovely things for sale at Good Shape Design, things like posters from Cody Hudson (although his print is sold out). Don’t despair however, there is a lot more there and a lot of it is tasty (like the poster above).

While I spread the local love, I don’t want to leave out Anthony Cozzi who calls himself Snowblinded. It’s an apt name for a Colorado-based designer.

Anthony recently released a series of giclée prints that would really tie a room together. There is some really nice work their as far as posters go. Great work Anthony. Good stuff.

Thanks for the link Allen.

Rock Explosion

How would you like to own one of or even some of the most classic rock posters of all time? Well, as you can imagine, they ain’t cheap, but then again who said they would be. I was pretty amazed that you could actually buy most of these. They are a little piece of history if you are a rock n’ roller like I am. They may actually be worth the price if you a big enough fan. Some of them really aren’t too bad. I never have any damn though so I doubt I will be owning one any time soon.

Regardless, of any or all of the above. It’s worth a peak at Rock Explosion just to see some of these classic rock posters.

Changethethought – Message Posters

I created two more Changethethought ‘message’ posters last week. I wanted to try to create something timeless, yet stylish that looks as though it could either be current or could have been created years back. The font is entirely custom. It is a variant of the font I created for the Barack Obama posters that some people loved and others hated. I have since refined the font greatly to make it my own.

These posters will most likely be silkscreened on heavy paper, natural tone stock for the chocolate poster and white for the lime poster. I have been receiving a lot of emails lately requesting posters. I have not printed any officially yet but there should be some available near the end of this summer. I will let everyone know when they are in the storefront.

It’s been great just working with pure typography again lately. I almost forgot how much I love type. I have a new image series in the works however and that will be on the site sometime in the next few weeks. Lots of things going on. Stay tuned.

Well, I pulled a fast one and deleted a poster I created yesterday because I just didn’t like how it came out. This is another one I had been working on, off and on for a while. I finished it up to my satisfaction today and thought I would give it a post. You can view it along with all the other posters in the print section. As I said in the post I deleted, I have also put a bunch of my past type treatments in the type section as well.

New & Improved Bucky Fuller Poster

Comments Off on New & Improved Bucky Fuller PosterCtt News

godisaverb_a3.jpg

As you can see, I redesigned the poster last night. This time I decided to make it less about the typography and more about Buckminster Fuller. I wanted to better unify the marriage between the organic and the geometric, since I think that says a lot about what Fuller himself accomplished, especially with the geodesic dome. I actually think it works better than the last poster and serves as a better commemoration of Fuller. Ironically, by making the type smaller but centering it in the circle above the image of Fuller gives it more brevity and buries it deeper in memory. I decided not to do any erosion edging to the poster as well because it kind of impedes on the integrity of the geometry. I think I am going to print this leaving the white border as well so when it is framed, there will be a nice border around it if someone wants to center it with a black matte. Again if I print it, I will also probably use a heavier white stock. Anyway, its a done deal now and is going back in the book.

I have posted Mike Krol’s work before on my last blog but he has since updated with some new material. He experiments a lot with his design and every layout is a little different showing a range of influence. His latest work does not disappoint and he appears to be getting better and better at what he does.

I am a big fan of the poster he did for Planes Mistaken for Stars.

Changethethought Posters Coming

more_posters.jpg

I bet you didn’t think it was possible for me to create even more posters did you? Well, think again. There are yet even more in the PRINT section of the site and I am adding one at the rate of about one a week to every two weeks. I will be gathering price quotes later this month on printing and should have some in the store late this summer. I am looking into metallics, varnishes and potentially fluorescents. Should be a little something to love for every design nerd. Don’t take offense to that statement by the way, I am probably the biggest one of all. I have been experimenting with all manner of illustration style and typography. I am trying to really take one each poster individually and do something unique for each. There is a little more Brazilian love in there too since the love of my life is Brazilian. I will be going there again later this summer as well. I am ready now. I could really use a vacation.

There will also be a digital downloads section in my storefront later this year that will offer up, for a very low price, bundles of the vector art I have amassed and categorized over the last decade. I am also planning on offering up store space to my other bloggers, so there may be some of their tees, posters etc. available in the store later this year as well.

Not For Commercial Use Free Prints

Comments Off on Not For Commercial Use Free PrintsGraphic Design

notforcommercialuse_posters.jpg

notforcommercialuse_poster.jpg

According to design studio Build, the ‘Not For Commercial Use‘ project came about following “a drunken conversation about the possibilites of design in the hands of a sympathetic printer, and of print in the hands of an understanding designer.” The conversation occurred between Build’s Michael C. Place and Paul Hewitt of the print firm Generation Press.

Initially they decided to produce a set of postcards to give away to show their range of printing processes but then the idea evolved into free posters and guerrilla-style dissemination of the materials. So, they started pasting them up all over London, which eventually meant an extra hand being lent by longtime Generation Press collaborator Richard Bull of Yacht Associates. With the help of Rick Guest and Richard Carroll the entire process was documented and commemorated in a special stitch-bound A3 catalog.

So, here is the good part. You can win a set of all 5 posters. All you need do, is send an email to iwant@notforcommercialuse.com

Just tell them how much you love them and that you would sell your soul for a well designed set of posters. I am not sure if they will ship to the U.S. since they are in England but it might be worth a shot.

Job Wouters, AKA Letman describes himself as cuckoo about letters and it shows in his poster work. They are filled with experimental forms and come in a wide array of colors showing varied influences, but they are almost all good in their entirety.
