Seb Lester is etching an inarguable place in the current annals of typographic history (I do my best to never miss a chance to use the word ‘annals’ when it’s applicable). This latest poster is just fantastic. Seriously amazing work that no doubt took a true commitment to create. You can pick one up in either silver or gold here.

My guess is that you will be seeing these clever book sculptures from Paul Octavious all over the creative blogosphere as they are precisely the kind of sculptural typographic works that seem to be resonating with the online creative community. After seeing them though, be sure to dive into his portfolio where you will also find some exceptional photographic art.

In a collaboration with the AIDS awareness fund (RED), book publisher Penguin commissioned a team of designers and typographers to create 8 new covers for Penguin Classics. Each cover uses a quote pulled from the text. Three of the eight covers featured were designed in-house by Penguin Press, with the remaining covers created by Nathan Burton, Studio Frith, FUEL, Grey318, and Non-Format (whose cover you can see above). It’s a great project and would have been fantastic to be a part of but (if you don’t mind me expressing my personal opinion here) I had mixed feelings about the covers myself. I felt like the executions were sometimes a little off for the subject matter. Regardless, it is nice to see Penguin branching out and doing something different.
You can see all the covers at CR.

I have been working on an ongoing project featuring some of my favorite type faces using random platitudes to give the type a message to communicate thereby helping bring out the personality that is unique to each face. The series is titled ‘Random Platitude 2010 Type Specimen Posters’. I haven’t printed them as of yet and borrowed the technique of over laying the designs onto a template folded-poster background in order to create the illusion of physicality. It’s something I borrowed from Stefan Lucut and a technique I employ on all my designs since I rarely have any time to photograph them nor do I have access as of yet to decent photography equipment. I will most likely be making more of these and am planning to print some in the near future. I have recently completed some big projects for some big brands and I will be posting those soon as well. Big plans in the works for Changethethought in 2010.
You can view the rest of the posters in the PRINT section of the site.

Los Angeles-based graphic designer and photographer Carlos Tarrats has continued to update his portfolio with some very rational Brockmann-esque work for American Apparrel. Sexy women and angled Helvetica seem to fit together very nicely. He has also added some very nice works to his photography portfolio as well.

Lettercult has released their picks for the best of 2009. There are some choice examples of typography on display as expected. Luke Lucas made the list a few times and I have to admit to always being a fan of his work. It makes me realize I need to up my game.

Neue is an online magazine pieced together through submissions. Each issue is about a different city and asks submitting designers to interpret their city through a typographic poster. The current issues is New York and the next issue is Barcelona. Something tells me Denver won’t make the list.

London based ‘typo-illustrator’ Sarah A. King has stayed busy and recently uploaded a series of fruits that she actually hand drew typography onto. It’s kind of a bizarre thing to do but the end result was really interesting and definitely not something you see everyday. Eat your words. Literally.

Bay area native Alex Varanese has an unusual style all his own. I have seen his work before and posted it in prior versions of the blog but he has been staying busy and recently updated with a new series of experimental typographical layouts. He obviously has a fetish for the color orange, that much is easy to figure out and he has a thing for cassette tapes and the 80s. He is also very good at rendering 3d type and image. The one thing that you might not pick up on right away until spending a little time surfing around his site is that he also has a great sense of humor. He may or may not know that he is also a good writer. What I’m trying to say is this guy’s got some skills and I am picking up on what he is layin’ down.

I posted a link to designer and typographer Sean Freeman just last week to showcase a project he recently completed with Pomme Chan. I didn’t realize however that he had just updated his website with a lot of new work. His type illustrations are top notch and just downright fun to look at which is no doubt because of his commitment to the final product.

Bangkok born Graphic designer, illustrator and typographic illustrator Pomme Chan got in touch to let us know she recently updated her portfolio with a new typographic illustration completed in collaboration with Sean Freeman (who also has some new work that is well worth looking into). She also completed a nice series of illustrated type for New York Times Magazine. Pomme is currently based in London where she can be commissioned to lend her unique artistically organic style to new design and illustration projects.
