Art and design studio Morning Breath has updated with a new website and some new work in their portfolio. I guess I had no idea just how much album art they have done so that was a bit of an eye opener for me. I am more familiar with their poster/art/screen printing work and didn’t realize how much design is their bread and butter.
FYI: The above image is available as a signed 3 color screenprint here.

This latest little set of images created by Hort for Nike’s Zoom Lebron VII campaign are stunningly awesome in their simplicity of execution and complexity of form. Beautiful. Hort can do no wrong.

“Grafik Design Awards 2010 Launches to Celebrate Stars of UK Graphic Design Grafik Magazine, the UK’s only monthly magazine devoted entirely to graphic design is to launch its own awards scheme. The first Grafik Design Awards is open for entries at www.awards.grafikmag.com with a closing date of 31 January 2010. The awards event itself will take place 29 April 2010.
The Grafik Design Awards launches as the only UK awards dedicated solely to graphic design. The judging panel is made up of a combination of respected designers who represent a variety of disciplines and non-UK designers and non-designers who have a great understanding of the graphic design industry. Judges are: ANGHARAD LEWIS, WIM CROUWEL, NICK ROOPE, EMILY KING, EVA RUCKI, PETER SAVILLE, CAROLINE ROBERTS, BEN PARKER, KATE MOROSS, SARA DE BONDT, PHIL BAINES and MARINA WILLER.
Entry for one piece of work costs £50 and £25 for additional entries thereafter with a free three month subscription to Grafik magazine included in the entry fee. There are no categories; any work that is graphic-related and represents the broad spectrum of talent in the UK graphic design industry will be considered. It is open to all: individual designers, design groups, students, artists or companies. A total of ten projects will receive an award, with a coveted Grafik Design Awards Trophy also being awarded to ‘Best Newcomer’ to be judged and awarded by Peter Saville, and ‘Best Studio’ to be judge and awarded by Wim Crowel.”
This sounds like a pretty remarkable opportunity to get your work (if you live in the UK) in front of an amazing panel of judges. Thank you for the note Richard.

Un.titled UK Creative Director James Warfield has updated with both a new website and work. There is some beautifully considered graphic design in his portfolio including the above brochure for Hickling and Squires. He was kind enough to link back to Changethethought in his links section as well and I thank him very much for that.

Letter Heady is a blog devoted to the subject of Letterhead design which should be of some interest to those of us in the design field. The blog has just started out so there are not a lot of examples up yet but it has the potential to grow more interesting over time.

As a part of his MFA program, designer Alex Cornell who currently works with Scott Hansen at ISO50 took a swing at rebranding Playboy Magazine. He wanted to “strip away all of the trashiness and cheapness that has come to infect the pages of the current Playboy” and bring back the sophistication he believes the publication has lost from it’s early years. The end result was an attractive print project complete with a very nice logo mark. Alex sent me an email about the project a long time back and it was one of the many things that got lost in the shuffle between my responsibilities as an advertising AD, graphic designer for Ctt and blogger. My sincerest apologies to Alex. Excellent work.

Barcelonian design agency Ruiz + Company have updated their website and portfolio. Choosing something from their body of work to represent them is nearly impossible. Every single project is impeccably produced and no-doubt analyzed and toiled over to the most minute detail. That is probably the reason for their long list of impressive awards that includes gold Clios, Gold from the New York Art Directors Club, Gold from the London International Advertising Awards and Silver from the Cannes International Advertising Festival. That is only a few of the awards they have won. If you are looking for some inspiration today, this will probably do the trick. Beautiful design. What are they putting in the water in Barcelona? I was just there, and I hope I brought some of whatever it is back with me.

London design powerhouse Barnbrook has updated with a new website and a few new examples as work so far as I can tell. Regardless, it’s another excuse to peruse through their incredible body of expertly realized design work.

Digital Mash is a ‘mash’ of work from Australian (now living in Japan) graphic designer Rob Morris who is heavily influence by the ‘modernist school of design’. His sites seems a little heavy-handed in tone, but he has some nice examples of typographical layout happening within his design portfolio.

NYC-based Graphic designer and illustrator Damien Correll is someone I always keep tabs on and he has just a very few new bits and pieces in his portfolio. It appears he has been seeking an intern lately (or perhaps last summer), so it sounds as though he and his partner Garrett have been busy. If you have yet to browse through his portfolio, consider this your chance. It’s always worth looking through.

German graphic designer Maike Hamacher has some unusual but amazing work in her portfolio. She is currently based in Berlin but values travel as she has it listed in her resume (that’s nice to see). The folding of the printed piece above is so complicated that there is a Youtube video explaining how it works. It’s a beautifully accomplished work of print however, and a real testament to her thinking. Maike asked me to note that the project was completed while working at Onlab and it was developed together with Nicolas Bourquin and Thibaud Tisso.

Datavisualization.ch is a swiss website about research findings in data visualization (bet you didn’t see that one coming) founded by interaction designers Christian Siegrist & Benjamin Wiederkehr. They have rounded up their favorite selections from 2009 and there are some stunning and inspirational layouts within their selection. Who knew there was an entire site devoted to this subject? Great stuff.

I wrote about Value and Service a very long time ago and was recently turned onto their amazing body of design work once again. It’s had to say enough good things about their highly considered, simply composed and elegant body of contemporary design work. You can spend a fair amount of time clicking just about every single link in their portfolio and discover one good example of design after another. I am not sure if they have recently updated and I am not sure it matters. Their work is worth a second browse regardless.

The new year updates are beginning as you can already see and here is yet another great addition as Roman Stikkelorum, Rindor Golverdingen and Michael Danker update their collective portfolio at Studio Vruchtvlees with some attractive new work. It must be nice to be based in the Hague.
