Nando Costa: FOTB 2010 Titles

Comments Off on Nando Costa: FOTB 2010 TitlesMotion Graphics

You can thank Nando Costa for this compelling title sequence for this years Flash on the Beach event which I had honestly never heard of until I watched these titles. Nando is extraordinarily talented in the realm of motion and animation. He used metals with magnetic properties to accomplish this sequence and I especially enjoyed how the style and video do the heavy lifting while the typography is treated so exquisitely simple that it almost isn’t there. It’s a delicate balance that works very well.

I recently emailed Nando about my own studio but alas, never got a response. Well, here’s to him and his work regardless because I consider him one of the very best in the field.

From what little I can gather from Facu Samman’s website is that he is Brazlian (or Portuguese) and an illustrator, 3D artist and animator. He’s most likely young as his portfolio reflects that but he is definitely doing some interesting things and could be rolling out a much more aggressive portfolio in the future. Definitely someone to check back on in the coming months.

Rafael Morinaga is a motion designer from Minas Gerais, Brazil. He has a wildly colorful portfolio of trendy but highly expressionistic and sometimes experimental project work. It’s all part and parcel for the great wave of design sweeping it’s way across Brazil where lately some very colorful, fun and exciting work seems to keep pouring out.

G: Tiny Blips & Short Clips

Comments Off on G: Tiny Blips & Short ClipsMotion Graphics

I am going to to something a little different here starting today. Swedish born Hong Kong based director/designer/illustrator/animator Daniele Manoli sent me an email about a project he did with no budget just to stretch himself creatively and I must say that I was incredibly impressed. He created a short film for every single letter in the alphabet. That’s 26 different short films full of animation, motion graphics, live action and any other technique Daniele felt like experimenting with. It’s quite an amazing project and we (at the Ctt studio) were super impressed with the effort and the shear volume of experimentation and techniques employed. We were also totally stoked that he shared it with us right away.

So all that being said (and back to my original sentence), I am going to post one of the videos everyday for the next 26 days starting in random order. Today it is the letter ‘G’, which we were rather fond of. You can see all of the videos here.

You just have to take your hat off to Dvein. They keep producing unexpected and rather undefinable yet totally original work. It’s always interesting and it looks like they must be having a great time producing it. Hats off.

This particular piece is to celebrate the 100th issue of IdN magazine (idnworld.com/ 100/).

Imaginary Forces

Now that Mike Slane has joined me in the Ctt Studio I have been paying a lot closer attention to motion graphics, especially considering how involved I am going to become in that side of the creative business. This weekend I nerded out with another friend of mine in the motion/animation/film industry playing God of War 3 since my wife is out of the country for a couple of weeks. Seemed like a good time to act like a kid again since I rarely get the chance. I was immediately blown away by the opening title sequence of the game and discovered it was created by the motion/animation studio Imaginary Forces. It’s a beautiful piece of animation and it continues throughout the game stringing the story together as you play. Creating the sequences must have been a huge project and IF executed it amazingly. God of War 3 is just the tip of the iceberg as far as their portfolio goes and the rest of their work is definitely worth checking out.

The Transcendent City

Comments Off on The Transcendent CityMotion Graphics

The Transcendent City is a short film produced for a final year Masters in Architecture by Richard Hardy. Here is a bit of insight from Hardy on the film: “The concept of a future sustainable city is developed for a society that is currently not responding effectively to environmental dangers. “Transcendence” in this case referring to a point when artificial intelligence has reached or surpassed that of the human.”

You can see a few ‘making of’ bits in Hardy’s Flicker pages.

FUEL TV: Excite Boost

Comments Off on FUEL TV: Excite BoostMotion Graphics

Fuel TV has added some exceptional new promo spots to their already fantastic reel for their artist ident series. Justin Harder created life-size ‘pixelated’ motorcycle racers for his spot. You can actually see pictures of the process at his Flickr account. It must have taken a crazy amount of time and money to produce. There are also 2 new spots from Brand New School that look amazing and feature some impressive 3D work. You can see the Brand New School spots here and here. It’s refreshing to see a brand both inspiring and allowing so much raw creativity.
