‘In August’ is a fifteen minute short film utilizing both 2D and 3D animation which took nearly two years to create. The film was written and directed by Andrés Barrientos and Carlos Andrés Reyes and produced by Daniel García. Oruga served as the Executive Producer Pedro Tosin with music composed by Sergio A. Trujillo and the band Sinapis.
Our friends at Legwork here in Denver just keep kicking ass. They are super good at what they do and they are good guys to boot. Our studio is really proud to call these guys friends and we couldn’t be happier that they are here in Denver and are putting great work out there. It’s a good thing for all of us. This piece is a little older and was created for the Colorado Lottery under the creative direction of local ad agency Cactus. This is by far one of our favorite pieces Legwork has done over this past year and we were really inspired by it.
I haven’t checked in on Brazilian motion designer Thiago Oliveira in a long time but since my last visit he has updated with some beautiful and etherial new work all under his great monicker ‘Love Machine‘.
Laika has been busy lately and has updated with some excellent new motion design work that relies on some amazing illustration and 3D work. They are doing some spectacular work lately and definitely worth keeping an eye on.
There is some tasty stuff on Takuya Hosogane’s reel. There is a flair for using simple elements to generate a rich and organic visual.
Have you heard of Black Swan yet? Oh no? They are a motion design powerhouse established by quite possibly some of the most talented young motion designers on the West Coast. And they are already kicking ass and taking names. They might not have a ton of work on their site yet, but trust me they are working on some amazing projects. Keep an eye firmly planted on this studio in the future. They are just getting started and I am already expecting some phenomenal work.
Mexico based Motion Director: Marco Vinicio AKA Kultnation has been one of the best kept secrets of several top motion design studios and it’s easy to see why with his portfolio. He’s got the skills to pay his bills.
Animator, 3D artist and Director Jesse Kanda is at it again with another experimental 3D animation titled ‘Dutch Wife’. Strange, artistic and etherial.
This recent video for VHS or Beta was based on an original concept by Pixelfucks.
Director Graham Hill explains:
“Pixelfucks is a tumblr that was started early last year by a couple friends of mine as a diversion from their day jobs. The band saw the animated gifs and loved the aesthetic for the song. Pixelfucks then approached me and asked me to do the video.
Starting with the lyrics as a jumping off point, I knew we wanted to show the impacts and memories a relationship leaves on you—a physical representation of feelings. The question then was how to most simply visualize this and still push that odd off-kilter feeling in the imagery. Since it’s an age-old story, I decided to strip away all the context around our main characters and shoot only the essential elements on either a black or a white background.
So, after splashing blue paint all over the actors and squeezing them into a variety of skintight green and blue costumes, we took the footage and hammered out an edit. Using that edit as the foundation, we ran it through a crafty combination of keying, tracking and roto. Finally, applying a judicious mix of psychedelic patterns and color, we eventually arrived at the desired proportion of offbeat images and story.”
As you may or may not know we have been cranking out a lot of Motion Design work lately at studio Changethethought (hence my lack of blog posts) and we were inspired by this little motion editorial piece for the BBC by Iamrader.
Daniel Oeffinger has a bright fun and illustrative body of motion design work as I am sure you can surmise from his reel.
Juan Molinet has produced work for several notable studios as his character driven cartoon-esque with an adult edge work seems perfect for modern mograph purposes. He’s got some fun and colorful work in his portfolio.

Well, it was Dr. Duncan MacDougall of Haverhill, Massachusetts who first attempted to weigh the human soul. In 1907, he placed 6 dying patients on a homemade scale, which also acted as a bed for the patients. More recently in Dan Brown’s novel, “the Lost Symbol”, there is a segment that explains how “The Institute of Noetic Science” uses noetics to weigh the human soul. After tests on terminally ill patients, it came across that immediately after death, a person’s weight dropped.
So, what would happen if they found a way to contain this invincible mass.. this soul.. Obviously the only reason to do this would be to put it in some kind of awesome robot.. yeah!”

Oh Hello is a Seattle based motion design and animation studio cranking out some solid work and they very recently updated their portfolio with lots of new goodies.
There is some rock solid motion and 3D work coming out of studio Elastic. It’s all good stuff and they know how to seamlessly integrate 3D into live action. I would keep an eye on these people.
