Photographer Alex Prager has a unique style that harkens back to a time when the right fit, cigarette or hairstyle could make just about anyone look famous so long as the camera captured them at just the right moment in an act of authentic cool.

If you are a fan of ‘type as image’ then you have to have heard of or should at least be following the work of Luke Lucas. If you haven’t then it’s time to get familiar as he recently updated his personal portfolio.

Pulled directly from the source:
“Sasha, a young Russian artistocratic girl at the end of the 19th century, dreams of the Great North and languishes over Oloukine, her grandfather, a renowned scientist and Arctic explorer, who has not returned from his last expedition to conquer the North Pole. He transmitted his vocation to Sasha which is far from satisfying her parents as they have already arranged for their daughter to marry.
She revolts against this destiny, flees and is resolved to going to join Oloukine a longway north.”

There is something Gonzo about the gestural, colorful and psychedelic drawings of Jared Africa. And I am a big fan of Gonzo.

There is a kind of silently austere obscurity about Noah Kalina’s photographs. His subjects, be them human or otherwise are left to their own devices and presented in a way that the viewer must confront them on their own terms. In short, it’s photography in the raw.

All I can tell you about Smithe is that it appears he is Mexican and he loves psychedelia. Aside from that his work should speak for itself.

They say you need to know how to do ‘everything’ these days to fit into the current creative job market, especially on a global scale. Whether or not you actually believe or buy into that bullshit is probably left to your own personal experience. Talent finds a way to shine regardless of the medium. Taking all of that into account, Sebastian Onufszak is a creative of the times. He practically can do everything and is pretty damn good at all of it too. The even crazier thing is that he keeps getting better at just about everything he is doing and you can see that in his updated portfolio.

The multi-disciplinary studio C100 Purple Haze (yes you read that correctly) has kept busy and sent a note about a recent update to their website that includes a flurry of new projects. It’s an interesting body of work that stretches from more fashion-orientated editorial work all the way through snow board graphics.

Powerhouse motion studio Buck relaunched last week with some spectacular new work. We spent nearly an hour last week just discussing and trying to figure out how they produced the above piece produced for Good Books. They are a huge source of inspiration to a lot of studios right now and have consistently cranked out stellar work.
…on a side note I apologize for the lack of posts lately. We are currently working on a big merger with our production studio and it’s been a little crazy lately on the ‘work’ side of things. I promise to get the ‘blog’ side back in business this week.

Illustrator Sam Wolfe Connelly has recently updated his website with more of his soft, contemporary pop-inspired illustration work that looks like it makes it to paper before it’s taken into the computer. He’s honing his craft and it shows in his recent work. Inspiring stuff.

Gareth O’Brien is a healthy part of the tasty butter spread over the bread of one of my favorite studios, Buck. A quick glance not just at his work but the presentation of his work will be enough to start the wheels turning as to why he’s an asset to Buck.

I’ve been insanely impressed by the fledgling motion studio Diestro in the past few months. They literally kicked the door down when they first posted their portfolio and they are elevating their broadcast work to that rare echelon that might daringly be described as ‘art’. Their recent update is a testament to that statement.

Here’s another Aussie skate punk band I have started to follow. They’ve got a fun, low-fi and crunch sound that despite the grit goes down smooth on melody. There are some great tracks on their EP that you can grab on iTunes and their full length album ‘Nothing to Do’ was just released last month.
Band: Bleeding Knees Club
Track: Teenage Girls

Friends is another ‘newish’ band I have taken an interest in. Based out of Brooklyn, their echoing throwback sound is instantaneously catchy and recognizable in a good way. I am not entirely sure if they have released an EP or feature length but I’d love to know if there is more out there. If you’ve got any more information about the band, please drop some links in the comments.
