There must be no rules at MTV when it comes to these promos and I think that is brilliant. Hence the sheer madness that is this spot from PepperMelon.

“The Alphabet 2- a horn book video experiment – is a developmental spelling – video where each character visually represents the meaning of the word itself. Playing with different techniques and materials into little and big spaces, but always focusing on Helvetica font’s proportions. A collection of words in a delightful spelling-video.”

Alright this is just one more reason that as a new studio ourselves, we are totally inspired and motivated by studios like I Love Dust. Out of a sheer love for kitsch and art they have put together an exhibition devoted to the colorful characters known only as professional wrestlers and have specifically dedicated the show to members of said part that have departed the land of the living. The event is called The Dead Wrestler Society and will be exhibiting at The Aspex Gallery in Gunwharf Quays, PORTSMOUTH with a preview 21 September 6pm – 8pm and the full showing from 21 September to 30 October 2011. I so wish I could attend this one. What a great idea.
Improving upon, competing with or even coming close the the juggernaut typeface Helvetica is no small task. But that didn’t stop Mash Creative from making an extremely valiant effort in doing so. The end result of that effort is a typeface called RM Regular that you can now purchase at Hype For Type. It’s a beauty. I’d expect to see this one cropping up in a few projects out there this next year.
Uhh. Hmm. Yeah, no comment really on this one except for WTF maybe? But WTF in a kind of awesome inspiring way.
“For years we have had an urge to create a character-driven animation piece. For us, the opportunity came knocking in the Fall of 2010 disguised in the form of a pitch for ‘Funcheez’.
We got excited and pulled out all the stops for the pitch. We designed characters and environments, drew up storyboards, colour boards, and boardomatics. The pitch was beautiful and fun, but in the end the client decided to go with another studio for the spot.
But it was too late—we had somehow fallen completely in-love with our strange little alien creatures and rather than relegating them to our salon des refusés to gather dust, decided to take the plunge and build a story around them.
Read more about the project and how it came to life on our site here.”
Illustrator and type as image illustrator I should say, Job Wouters AKA Letman has updated with some excellent new work.
It’s not really news whenever someone starts a Tumblr account but when that someone is bad ass illustrator and tattoo artist Mike Giant well…then it is news.
Painter and illustrator Casey Weldon recently updated with some new work including the lovely painting above for the Pixies tribute show.
Our good friend Jim Kenney has been getting a lot of attention lately with ‘Polack’, an independent film about Polish jokes and the insidious nature of racism, homophobia all the like. The film really draws you in, makes you question your assumptions and doesn’t let go.
“What a roller coaster! Entrancing from the start. I was completely caught up and off guard by this beautifully crafted, deeply personal journey into history. Just when you’re delighting in clever anima- tion interwoven with old TV episodes and extraordinary archival footage, you’re hit slam-dunk with Nazis and gay bashing. Unexpected, jarring, complex – like a cubist painting or climbing into an imaginative mind. Made me think twice about every joke I’ve ever been party to.”
– Nikki Silva, of NPR’s Peabody Award-Winning Kitchen Sisters
Illustrator Kevin Tong has been on a roll this year with some seriously amazing prints created for the likes of Mondo and Spoke Art. He is about to drop some new prints this week and that makes it as good a time as any for the uninitiated to check out his work.
Gerhard Human is more than just an awesome name, he’s an illustrator who generates colorful, poppy and gyrating images of crazy characters.
“Flotsam & Jetsam is a documentary based around the beachcombers of Texel, one of the largest Frisian islands north of Holland.
Due to Texel’s geographical position, tidal system and strong winds, an estimated two tons of Flotsam & Jetsam washes up on its beach each day.
The film follows the lives of the beachcombers (or Jutters as they are known), exploring their relationships and history as extraordinary people in extraordinary situations.”
Painter Michael Peck uses oil to create some truly beautiful works of art that feel almost like snapshots from distant memories. The ability to paint in such a style has always amazed me and Peck is a master.

This is the official music video for Kanye West and Jay Z’s recent single ‘No Church in the Wild’. And I gotta say it, despite all the backlash Kanye just keeps putting stuff out there that is impossible not to pay attention to.
We are digging illustrator and screen printer Bill Connors loose, cartoony pop culture clash mashup imagery that he then silkscreens onto colorful, kick ass posters. Delicious.
