I remember seeing Antony Micallef’s work a few years ago on the cover of one of the Semi Permanent books. I only recently finally stumbled across his website and was just completely blown away by his work. It’s sincerely amazing.
Quoted from Wikipedia:
“Born in Swindon, England and a graduate in Fine Arts from the University of Plymouth, some of Micallef’s work illustrates many contemporary cultural aspects and connects them with the human experience. His use of neutral colors and depictions of the human form delve beyond pop culture and bring to the surface many of the things that operate underneath the cultural construct. Aspects of Micallef’s work examines our dichotomous relationship with consumerism, questioning how we can despise multi-national brands yet still allow ourselves to be seduced by them. He frequently uses the union of two opposites to make an intriguing chemistry. Micallef’s practice has been summarized as ‘critical pop’, exposing the darker side of our consumerist society and the human condition.
His painting style has been compared to Francis Bacon and is seen as an amalgamation of influences from the old masters such as Caravaggio and Velázquez to more modern contemporary photographers and graphic artists. His depiction of the human body and mark making echo his teachings from John Virtue, who in turn was taught by Frank Auerbach. The rawness of expressionistic painterly marks is a stark contrast to the more graphic elements which surfaces throughout his work.”

London based Inventory Studio was founded in 2008 by Robert Boon & David Lane. They have some great work for branding and print including the logo and stationary system for the restaurant consultancy ‘Eat Green’. ‘Cracking’ as my friends across the pond might say.

Bangkok born Graphic designer, illustrator and typographic illustrator Pomme Chan got in touch to let us know she recently updated her portfolio with a new typographic illustration completed in collaboration with Sean Freeman (who also has some new work that is well worth looking into). She also completed a nice series of illustrated type for New York Times Magazine. Pomme is currently based in London where she can be commissioned to lend her unique artistically organic style to new design and illustration projects.

I wrote about Value and Service a very long time ago and was recently turned onto their amazing body of design work once again. It’s had to say enough good things about their highly considered, simply composed and elegant body of contemporary design work. You can spend a fair amount of time clicking just about every single link in their portfolio and discover one good example of design after another. I am not sure if they have recently updated and I am not sure it matters. Their work is worth a second browse regardless.

Miss Bugs is actually a team of two comprised of one girl and one boy. There mishmash work combines imagery from popular culture with references to street culture and graffiti. They approach their imagery graphically, using collage, stencil, silk-screen and anything else they can get their hands on. The two artists are originally from Bristol and Wales but moved to London in 2001 where they have slowly emerged as heavy hitters in the street art and graffiti scene.
I was quite taken by their work, but it is sure to stir controversy amongst artists and creatives as it again uses preexisting imagery and art similar to the approach taken by artists like Shepard Fairey. I do think some of the work from Miss Bugs is much more original though and more akin to a streetwise version of Andy Warhol. You can read an anonymous (they keep with the Banksy theory) interview with the artists at Juxtapoz as well.
