If you have a pulse and you’ve kept your ear to the ground creatively over the past few years I am sure you may have picked up on the influence of ‘hipster’ culture on both graphic design and advertising. And like it is with every trend after a period of time there will always be a backlash. And lately the hipster influence has definitely had it’s neck laid over the chopping block. I recently stumbled upon a fun little site called Hipster Branding that ‘rebrands’ well known companies with a little ‘hipster’ pastiche and it’s pretty dead on. Is it good you might ask? Well it’s hip.

I’ve been a fan of Hey Studio since I first laid eyes on their work. I usually am not a big fan of email newsletters, probably because so many are sent to me but I always look forward to theirs. They recently updated their website and for the fans of minimal and classic graphic design with just a hint of colorful latin flair it does not disappoint.

Somerville, Massachusetts based studio Oat Creative is doing some air tight branding work with an old school eastern seaboard flair. Think yachts, fishing, good beer and finely-tuned typography and you should start to find the groove.

Chris sent me this really cool mailer a month or 2 back and I was really impressed by how considered the final print piece was. He’s got a real flair for typography or ‘type as image’ as I like to call it and he’s going to be a wanted man the minute he sets foot outside the Cal Arts campus. I’d keep an eye on him if I were you.

It’s an interesting body of work that stretches from more fashion-orientated editorial work all the way through snow board graphics.

I was informed that Character likes to ‘fly under the radar’ but that might be hard to do with the portfolio they are developing. It’s worth talking about as there is some strong project work represented under the Character brand.

105 Parris is the name taken by designer Enis Maksutovski. He is a modern day creative crossing the media streams vis-a-vis art direction, design, illustration and photography. He is based near Dusseldorf, Germany where he provides creative solutions for TV, animation, print and interactive primarily targeting fashion, lifestyle, music and entertainment.

Andrei Ograda is a freelance graphic artist/designer from Bucharest, Romania who is currently “trapped” in Spain where he claims it has become near impossible to find work.
