Andrew Archer straddles the line between comic art and fine art but pulls it all off with a little digital panache. He’s posted several new works since I last dropped in on his portfolio and some of his more recent works are really stunning.

The tee shirt craze has definitely fizzled in the past couple of years from whence it reached it’s peak back around 07-08 in my opinion. There are a few brands still holding it down when it comes to graphic tee shirts but fewer are making much of an impression as they enter the overcrowded market. Zatoon is a company that caught my eye as their wares look almost nothing like most of what I’ve seen lately. The artwork for the shirts is wildly detailed and bizarre. The attention to detail is really impressive and I can’t imagine one of their tees not making an impression.

Yong Ho Ji produces his unique sculptures using metal, styrofoam and recycled rubber tires. I encountered one of the sculptures in person at a graduate show at CU a few weeks ago and was really impressed. The sculptures themselves are either life-sized or larger and the detail is really amazing.

Having spent most of my life lifting weights, at least since the age of 13 anyway, I found this little mini-documentary to be good fun. This little girl may only weigh 99 pounds but it’s 98 pounds of heart. Posted by Jewish Daily Forward.

An artist known only as Rrrrrrrroll will leave you spinning with some gif art that works hard to put the art in the gif genre. And yes that was intended as a pun. I guess you could think of the work as ‘animated photography’.
If you know or find any more information about the artist please drop a line or two in the comment section.

The German illustrator and designer known only as DXTR has made some recent additions to his street-inspired portfolio including some new illustrations for Nike and K2 snowboarding. Look closely at the image above and see if you can spot the word ‘Nike’. It’s in there. Great visual.

Alex Ziv lives and works in San Francisco and is a recent graduate from SFAI. He recently participated in a group show hosted by Fecal Face titled Cigarettes, Phone Cards & Hip Hop Clothing and has updated his site with new works from the show. Ziv’s work draws heavily from pop culture and cartoons.

A blog I frequent from time to time recently posted it’s favorite Marvel Comics covers for August 2012. I’ve renewed my interest in comics lately since we are jumping back into the print/poster/illustration game quite a bit lately and I found some of the cover selections at Super Punch to be pretty inspirational for illustration’s sake. The cover above is ASTONISHING X-MEN #53 by DUSTIN WEAVER. Super Punch has the covers listed as ‘solicitations’ so I don’t know exactly what that means in terms of whether or not the covers actually made it to print or not but regardless there is some striking artwork on display.

Magomed Dovjenko is a designer and illustrator I’ve been following for several years now. He is one of those select few who learned to make a name for himself when he was still in his teens and is experiencing quite a bit of success as a commercial designer while still only being in his early twenties. He has since updated his site quite a bit since I last dropped in on his portfolio. His bright, colorful, poppy and pulp-infused work is always worth the inspirational browse.

Russian illustrator Evgeny Parfenov is turning out some excellent, colorful and classic portraits for publications like Newsweek, Rolling Stone and Interview. His work is a lot of fun and is just the right mix of pop and art to lend itself towards a broad appeal which is no doubt why he is attracting the publications he’s illustrating for.

There is a tongue and cheek kind of a thing happening in the portfolio of David Ryski AKA Talkseek whose father was a firefighter. His love of skateboarding, music and street art apparently diverted him from following in his father’s footsteps.

I remember being infatuated with Luc Besson’s strange film the Big Blue as a kid and wondered what it must be like to free dive deep into the ocean. Matty Brown attempts to articulate that feeling in this ‘visual poem’ based on William Trubridge’s world record free dive of 100 meters. With only a single breath and no weights Trubridge descended into the world’s deepest blue hole, Dean’s Blue Hole in the Bahamas. He did so to help shed light on the plight of the world’s smallest cetacean, the Hector’s Dolphin of New Zealand.

Joshua Catalano developed this simple music video that in many ways almost feels like the graphics are generative based on the actual audio. It doesn’t look like Proce55ing though I could be totally wrong. If you know any more than I do, please leave a comment or two.

I Love Dust (still one of my all time favorite studios) was nice enough to email me some of their recent animation work for GE in Asia. The spots are anchored by the concept of Ancient myths colliding with the technology of today. The spots were directed by Golden Wolf and produced by ilovedust for GE China via TBWA SHanghai.
I was surprised to discover a lot of this work is being animated directly out of Photoshop which is something we’ll be looking into this year as a studio for sure.
Thanks for the email Ingi. I sure hope to visit you in the UK someday soon. Keep up the amazing work I Love Dust. You guys continue to inspire.

David D’Andrea’s work harkens back to a simpler and more intricate era of poster design gone by. He takes the time to craft some intricately detailed illustrations that make each poster he creates a genuine piece of art.

We Three Club is the work of Alex and Chris White both educated in the UK with degrees in Fashion and Fine Art respectively. The have a fully loaded arsenal of classic poster work in their portfolio. It’s all oozing a sharp personality that draws influence from psychedelic poster art past, 80s skate graphics and Chicano Folk art with just the right amount of fashion sense.
