Ruben Ireland: Updates

Comments Off on Ruben Ireland: UpdatesIllustration

London based illustrator Ruben Ireland uses ink, dirty water, acrylic, weathered paper, a wacom tablet and Photoshop to create his lyrical illustrations. Strangely enough after employing all of this media his work retains an almost vector-like quality. His images are very clean and stylistic but his subject matter is often playful. He has recently updated his portfolio.

Ventilate Japan

Comments Off on Ventilate JapanGraphic Design

Michael at Ventilate is a very nice person and I had the opportunity to exchange several emails with him in the past few weeks about a project I hoped to initiate but just didn’t have time to pull together. Fortunately, Michael grab the reigns and put together the ‘Ventilate Japan‘ project to help pool some money to put toward the relief effort in Japan. A lot of news has happened since the earthquake in Japan but there are so many still suffering and they really do still need global support in any way we can get it to them.

Ventilate managed to pull together some very talented artists who really put some passion into designing some great posters for the cause.

Thank you so much Michael and Ventilate.

Frank Magnotta: Again

Comments Off on Frank Magnotta: AgainArt

I rediscovered the work of Frank Magnotta today. There really is nothing like his graphite drawings. They are just strange, yet familiar and genuinely imaginative. The dimensional quality of his drawing is seriously impressive and it’s difficult to devise how exactly he goes about generating his unique images.

Plum Flower Deer

Comments Off on Plum Flower DeerMotion Graphics

“‘Plum Flower Deer’ began in 2009. Originally intended as a piece for F5, a design festival in New York, but was never competed and was not screened there. The film grew and became a rumination about love, hope, the natural world and rebirth.

Crush art director, Yoho Hang Yue, and his wife Queenie, also an art director, developed the story about a pair of Plum Flower Deer, (native to parts of China), who are separated by an act of man but are rejoined in spirit. The Plum Flower Deer is one of the most auspicious, divine animals in Chinese culture. The Plum Flower Tree itself has been the subject of innumerable paintings and poems, representing courage and elegance. The film drew on Chinese tradition, and art. The film’s closing poem, by 12th century Southern Song Dynasty Chinese poet Lu You, tells of the rebirth of spring and the courage of the plum flower through winter.

‘We wanted to bring this story to life using modern tools, but we wanted to keep the timelessness of the poem intact,’ says Yoho Yang Yue. ‘It is an ageless story that draws on the rich legacy of Chinese culture.’

The film took two years to complete and to create it Yoho used After Effects, Cinema 4D and shot elements to create this moving painting. Crush contacted Didier Tovel at Apollo Studios in Toronto to create a score and sound design that captured the mood of the visuals. The score takes its cues from traditional Chinese music without falling becoming a shallow pastiche, and still maintains a contemporary feel.”

Additional Story & Art Direction: Queenie Zhu

So we were super excited to see they have been cranking out some great work lately and their new website looks wonderful. Congratulations guys and we look forward to working with you more in the future.

Victo Ngai

Comments Off on Victo NgaiIllustration

Victo Ngai’s unique cultural heritage is alive and kicking in her illustrations. Her images are simple and accessible in subject but rich in color and movement. They retain a distinctly asian influence that references Japanese and Chinese ink prints. She spent some time on her bio, so as opposed to butchering it in my own words, you can read on below:

“Victo’s real name is Ngai Chuen Ching.

She was born and raised in Hong Kong.
She got her English name, Victoria, when she was in a British kindergarten as Ngai Chuen Ching was too hard to pronounce for the foreign teachers.
However, “Victoria” was too hard for her fellow Chinese classmates, so they started calling her Victo instead. Since “Ngai Chuen Ching” was only called/yelled by teachers or parents when Victo got into troubles, she decided she likes the name “Victo” better.

Victo has been wondering who she really is, where she really belongs to for all these time.

Victo’s cultural background is hard to nail down: she speaks Chinese(Both Cantonese and Mandarin), English and Japanese. She attended Christian schools, but is not Christian. She holds a British National (Overseas) passport but is not truly British. She is a Hong Kong citizen but does not have a Chinese ID card. Her parents live in Hong Kong; her grandparents are Chinese American living in the west coast of the States; and Victo went to Rhode Island School of Design on the east coast.”

Camila do Rosario

Comments Off on Camila do RosarioIllustration

Camila do Rosário has a masterful hand when it comes to generating fashion-influenced watercolor and pencil illustrations. Her portraits exude a feminine sensibility in both image and technique that is complimented by the employment of a unique color palette. The clincher of course is that she also hails from one of the most beautiful cities in Brasil.

Osama Bin Laden Killed

Comments Off on Osama Bin Laden KilledPolitics

Unless you have been living under a rock (slight pun intended) then you must have heard that one of the most notorious men on the planet was killed yesterday by U.S. Navy Seals. Osama Bin Laden’s Pakistani estate, yes estate which was far from the ‘cave’ he was always supposed to be hiding in, was raided and Bin Laden was shot dead. Lets just hope that this effectively draws to a close an era of U.S. politics that has cost this country trillions with little to no explanation as to why this took so long, cost so many lives and now finally ends in a ‘mansion’ where Bin Laden may have been living for years. Our hearts go out to all who lost loved ones on 9/11 as well as the families who gave their sons and daughters in servitude to our country. We have lost many freedoms since that fateful day and now it is time to rebuild and restore.

How does this news make you feel. This is a globally trafficked blog and out of pure curiosity we would love to hear your thoughts.

Leif Podhajsky: Updates Again

Comments Off on Leif Podhajsky: Updates AgainGraphic Design

I just can’t get enough of Leif Podhajsky and I don’t think I am the only one. It doesn’t make it easier that he is continually producing work from Tame Impala who has been one of my favorite bands in the past couple of years. They are lucky to have employed his skills while they could still afford them. He’s updated yet again with more work for the band that is again simple yet inspiring. I’d love a print of the above image.
