Here’s a little preview of a poster I illustrated featuring a rather local-centric icon for this year’s Artcrank Exhibition starting tomorrow here in Denver. The title of the poster is “Ride or D.I.A. tryin'”. It features one of our beloved local works of public art that just might be a symbol of the apocalypse. The poster is a 4 color screen print in an edition of 100. Forty of the posters will be available at Artcrank tomorrow and I will put the remaining 60 up for sale sometime next month for everyone who can’t make it out to the show. I’ll post details here when it’s up for sale online.
There is some amazing talent in this year’s show and some of the posters I’ve seen are fantastic. I honestly think it’s going to be one of the best Artcrank shows ever so if you can, please try to make it out.
The show starts at the Taxi building in Denver tomorrow at noon. You can get details and directions here. I hope to see you there. I’ll have my son in tow and it will be the first art show he’s attended that’s exhibiting some work created by his old man.
*On a side note: I apologize for the lack of posts lately. Since departing my partnership at Friends of Mine and relaunching my studio again single-handedly I have literally been busier than I ever have in my entire career which I didn’t think was possible. It’s been hard to keep up lately. Tons of new projects for Vail, Vladimir Jones, a local architecture firm, Armada Skis and several other clients have kept me totally tied up. I have 3 new posters all in the studio ready to ship so expect news on that soon. Thanks for your patience and please don’t hesitate to contact me with news to be featured on the blog, questions or projects. I get a little lonely here in the studio by myself sometimes too so if you wanna drop in just let me know and lets hang out. Tear me away from work please.

My friend Burke Miles was mentioned in an earlier post today but the man deserves his own space. He’s recently updated his site with a new reel and he is one of Denver’s best kept local secrets. He’s oozing with talent, he’s humble, modest and he’s a genuinely good person. All the right stuff to make for one of the best possible people to work with in Colorado. He was a part of the secret sauce here at Changethethought before we momentarily merged and then split with Friends of Mine and that is where he continues to work now. He does still accept freelance however and if you are looking for someone good to work with directly, Burke is most definitely your man. There isn’t enough room on this blog for all the good things I could say about him and I sure miss having him in my studio.

I love Dust was recently in touch to let me know that they updated their portfolio in a big way with a wealth of new design, illustration and animation work. They continue to inspire and know that my love for them guarantees a post. Oh how I wish I was across the pond so I could knock on their door and try to see if they’d take in a wayward designer/illustrator like me.

Friends of Mine was asked to contribute to the ‘Radical Openess’ TED Conference in Edinburgh, Scotland in collaboration with illustrator and director Superdeux. A friend of mine (no pun intended) Burke Miles developed the animation using the illustrations from Superdeux. They turned out a nice little intro along with sound produced by Dynamitve Laserbeam.
Good show Burke.

There is some lovely print and poster work in the portfolio of UK studio Telegramme. If you are a gig poster aficionado there is a healthy dose of inspiration on display.

It’s rare you see simple vector illustration work done right but Jack Hughes has a handle on it and is keeping it a touch retro but the stylistic approach and the content are a pitch perfect match.

One of my favorite pop illustrators has very recently updated his portfolio with some imagery from a recent gallery show. James Jirat Patradoon also got down on generating some animated gifs for the show that played on old televisions. Cool idea.

Tim Tadder pushes the contrast and levels in his photographs to that bleeding edge where they become almost hyper-real and totally saturated. It’s a look that lends itself well to advertising and it looks like Los Angeles-based Tadder has had plenty of projects streaming in as a result.

Painter Aaron Nagel updated both his website and his portfolio since I last dropped in a long long time ago. He’s continuing with the same portraiture imagery of women but starting to up the symbolism bit by bit as he goes.

He’s updated his portfolio yet again with dark and glorious imagery. The guy is such an inspiration. His work continues to be spectacular and no that is not an exaggeration.

There are some absolutely wild black and white digital collages in the Behance portfolio of French designer and illustrator Obery Nicolas. The imagery is very interesting and different from a lot of what I’ve seen lately.

Things get a little creepy in the portfolio of artist and illustrator Kreemos. It’s the kind of psychedelic creepy that I like though.

“The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art has organized a major traveling exhibition of new work by contemporary Japanese artist Motoi Yamamoto. The exhibition will premiere in Charleston May 24-July 7, 2012, as a featured presentation of the Spoleto Festival USA. Return to the Sea: Saltworks by Motoi Yamamoto will travel nationally after its inaugural presentation, including stops in Los Angeles, CA, Charlotte, NC, and Monterey, CA. The centerpiece of the exhibition will be a site-specific installation created entirely out of salt by the artist during his two-week residency at the Halsey Institute.”
Get lost in the contemplative and meditative works of Matoi Yamamoto. It would be an experience to witness his work in person.
