Comments Off on Typecon Poster Show: Last CallTypography
Michael Cina of of Michael Cina Associates wanted to remind everyone that the final due date for the 2010 Typecon Poster show is August 5th of this week. I know that only gives you two days to crank out your masterpiece but the clock is ticking. So far there have been some really great entries. You do not have to create something entirely new either. If you have something out there that you want to show the world and have judged by some big names in the business, then this is your chance.
You can learn more about this year’s Typecon event at the Typecon website. And in order to enter your poster for the show please download this form and fill it out to send in with your submission. Good luck!
Russian designer Tatiana Plakhova creates strange mathematical almost aquatic looking arrangements that she often titles ‘complexity’. I’d be curious how or what she uses to create the images but they are definitely unique and she has managed to carve a nice little niche for herself. I’m curious how they’d look in print.
French Canadian designer Julien Vallée has kept busy with his unique combination of design and hand generated dimensional typography. His titles for OFFF Paris bear his unmistakable mark and personality.
Eric Hu is a very young designer with a degree from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. He has also attended the Art Center College of Design. He’s recently done some work at Buck and was also awarded Gold from Graphis New Talent in 2010. Considering he’s just getting started, I would keep an eye on him.
Spanish illustrator Martin Sati has been busy creating some very attractive primarily vector illustrations. His work carries over what could almost be called the Barcelona or Spanish digital illustration style and once again it’s terribly fun to look at and hard to ignore.
It’s been a very long time since my last post about Australian design agency War and they have recently updated with some stellar graphic design work. New additions to their portfolio include the beautiful packaging design for Construction Technologies Australia.
Recent Nottingham Trent University graduate Luke Elliott has some nice print and branding work already in his book. If someone hasn’t staffed him yet, I would recommend looking into picking up his talent if you have an opening in your agency or studio. He’s only going to get better with experience.
Christopher Gray is a UK based designer currently represented by Studio AKA for Film & Animation. He works under the name ‘We Shall See’ and I do believe I have posted his work before in the past. He has recently updated his site and portfolio now in a blog-style format with some new and really exceptional design work. Watch his space for more updates now that he is publishing his portfolio updates in a blog format.
Paris-born designer Alexandre Nacache received a diploma from Créapole with honors, and has since become an Art Director at Euro RSCG. He has some nice design work in his book and still freelances from time to time.
Brooklyn-based designer Paul Isabella is very talented. He is one of those rare creative talents that possesses the unique ability to move seamlessly from something like graphic design into furniture design and fabrication without losing any of his craft. His work in both veins is equally inspiring and I would gladly hang a patterned print from him in my studio while sitting comfortably in one of his beautiful chairs.
I just returned from a trip to Brooklyn and walked through some of the areas where a lot of young designers and artists are taking up residence. It’s an exciting place to be and there is definitely a universal creative hive mind happening there that is causing some amazing work to come out of that area.
London based studio Shotopop has updated both their website and portfolio with some exciting new work. Shotopop works out of a shipping container on the shore of the river Thames. They definitely position themselves in a unique fashion and I could see how working out of a shipping container would influence that mindset.
Shhive is the experimental portfolio of Los Angeles based motion designer/concept artist Kenneth Robin. He is currently freelancing for Logan and is cranking out some beautiful work.
21 year old Sam Chirnside is a 2nd year Visual Communication major at Monash University. He’s fond of spiritually-inspired collage that although skews a little trendy still manages to communicate in a simple and universal way. He just updated his portfolio as well.
Keller Maurer Design is a graphic design consultancy based in Munich founded in 2002 by Martina Keller and Marcus Maurer. KMD has some cracking print work in their portfolio and they take a classic squeaky clean approach to layout.
Barcelona based creative studio Coco Bongo attack their projects with a rabid and infectious passion. This attitude has allowed them to work with some great clients and sifting through their work is a lot of fun. All you have to do in order to grasp their unique personality is keep your eyes on their logo animation in the upper left corner of their site. Great stuff.
Michael C Place and his wife have updated their website at Build. For the devout design fan Michael really needs no introduction as his work has been a strong influence on many designers over the years. His ‘keep it Helvetica’ approach has kept his work classic throughout his career and has kept him in the eye of many a client.
In case you do not know his story here is a little of his background from his new site:
“Michael C Place studied graphic design at Newcastle College from 1988—1990 and makes no secret of the fact that he left early to follow his dream of designing record sleeves. Michael worked first with Trevor Jackson in London before moving back up North to work with influential graphics studio The Designers Republic in Sheffield, where he worked for the best part of 9 years. Whilst there Michael produced some of the best-known & seminal works of tDR that, although always anonymous, became well-known amongst followers of the studio. In 2000 Michael took a break from the design world and went on a 10-month world trip with his wife Nicky, returning to set up Build in 2001. Michael features in the 2007 film ‘Helvetica-A Documentary Film’, has spoken at numerous conferences worldwide, & has several times been a judge at the prestigious D&AD global awards.
Michael is the Creative Director of Build.”
Recent Leeds College of Art graduate Lucy Gibson uses simple geometric forms in her work juxtapozed with organic imagery. Although some might be tiring of the geometric trend in graphic design, I do have to say that I really like Gibson’s work and minimal approach.
Photographer and designer Elise has some gorgeous work in her portfolio for some very large brands. Her photography work is stunning and it’s amazing that she can keep her design at the same level. A true talent.
