Russian illustrator Eika Dopludo has been busy since I last posted her work and has updated with some new and even trippier examples of hand drawn lettering. It’s psychedelic type as image and it’s a lot of fun to look at.

Andy Smith kind of says what he has to say about himself much better than I could. And he also recently put up a new site with several new examples of his often hand rendered typography. So I will let him speak for himself:
“Andy Smith studied illustration at the University of Brighton and the Royal College of Art, London. Graduating in 1998 he quickly established a client list of advertising, publishing and editorial clients including Orange, Mercedes, McDonalds, The Guardian, Expedia, Sony, Vodafone, Random House and Penguin Books, directing Run London a commercial for Nike in 2000. His work combines illustration and typography to create images that have humour, energy and optimism and all are executed with a handmade, hand-printed, tactile feel. Quirky characters find themselves in absurd situations, often with a large piece of lettering nearby. When not producing commercial work for clients Andy can be found in the studio screen printing books and posters about Fatty, the Target People and the Hot Dog. He has exhibited in the UK, USA, France and Australia. He lives and works by the sea in Hastings, East Sussex. His favourite colour is blue.”
Cee-Lo Green (Gnarls Barkley) has some choice words for all you gold diggers out there. The guy’s a genius. You just have to admit it. How many people are going to be singing this? Sign ‘o the times I guess when the new pop anthem chorus on everyone’s tongue starts with ‘fuck you’.
South African designer and typographer Jordan Metcalf has been busy and recently released some slick typographical imagery produced for Nike. You can see the work in his Behance portfolio but also get a glimpse of more of his efforts in his Flickr-folio.
Design studio Ohyescoolgreat has does indeed yes have some cool and great print work in their portfolio. They prefer to keep their approach simple and classic and hence have a body of work that signifies that philosophy. The result is some clean and cracking design for print.
Argentinian design studio NASA have updated with both a brand new website and several new works in their portfolio. It’s a trendy display but they have pulled in some really great clients for themselves and really have it dialed in on how to present their work.
Wow, I was very impressed by this live rendering of calligraphic type by Luca Barcellona for the Legacy of Letters italian tour, organized by Paul Shaw. Gorgeous work and amazing skills. Where do you learn to do something like that?
I don’t know how long ago Sydney based design agency Toko updated their website and portfolio but it doesn’t really matter. New or not, it’s worth looking into to get a glimpse at some genuinely inspiring design work bridging the gap with design as an artform. There is some sincerely beautiful work in their portfolio, including some excellent typographical work and that’s about all I have to say about that.
Jessica Hische has finally printed her entire Daily Drop Cap project as 8 inch by 8 inch letterpress posters. You can purchase one at a time for $40 bucks a piece or the entire alphabet for $2,000. They are absolutely gorgeous works of typographical art and she really out did herself printing all of them as letterpress posters. It’s a genuine way to appreciate her efforts in a timeless format. I’d love to purchase the letters to spell ‘changethethought’ but dare say we probably couldn’t afford the price tag at the moment.
YouWorkForThem took a little break recently from posting new items to their storefront and working on studio projects to have a little fun and play. They designed some simple posters utilizing fonts from their storefront then submerged them in water and photographed them. You can see the end result in their Behance folio. You can also download them as iPhone Wallpapers. The lingering question is if they will print them as posters, and if they do I would definitely be interested in purchasing a couple. I am a big big fan of Black Slabbath and it’s one of the few recent out-of-the-box fonts that really delivers when used as a display face. I still manage to sneak it into a lot of client projects.
Lucía Castro is a Barcelona based graphic designer with an outstanding body of typographic-focused print work. Her work is simple and classic but makes a very contemporary use of color in her layouts. What are they putting in the water in Barcelona anyway? Maybe it’s the paella, or it could be the jamón ibérico but it’s probably the hash.
Michael Cina of of Michael Cina Associates wanted to remind everyone that the final due date for the 2010 Typecon Poster show is August 5th of this week. I know that only gives you two days to crank out your masterpiece but the clock is ticking. So far there have been some really great entries. You do not have to create something entirely new either. If you have something out there that you want to show the world and have judged by some big names in the business, then this is your chance.
You can learn more about this year’s Typecon event at the Typecon website. And in order to enter your poster for the show please download this form and fill it out to send in with your submission. Good luck!
French Canadian designer Julien Vallée has kept busy with his unique combination of design and hand generated dimensional typography. His titles for OFFF Paris bear his unmistakable mark and personality.
Neutura™ was formed in 2003 to make fine display typefaces. They release about 2 typefaces a year and they are very reasonably priced. You can see some great samples by refreshing the home page. There are definitely some usable faces in the Neutura™ archive if you are looking to add some personality to a headline or two.
Argentinian designer and typographer Javier Bernales has some excellent experimental typography in his ‘Black Book’ which you can see in his Behance-folio. There is something ironic about posting a printed image of the word ‘click’ as a link.
British born, New York based typographer Craig Ward continues to update his portfolio with decorative typography employed to illustrate the concept driving the meaning of the words.
Swedish design studio Ateljé Altmann has a no frills squeaky clean body of graphic design work for print. It’s sharp and classic with a strong emphasis on typography.
I am taken by this hand drawn alphabet by the Russian design collective Dopludo. It must have taken forever to not only to draw each letter but to think up what each letter would be. It’s an impressive effort.
